Frequently Asked Questions

What is a registered agent?

A registered agent is designated to receive service of process (SOP) when a business entity is a party in a legal action (such as a lawsuit or summons), as well as documents from the state regarding your entity. All corporations and LLCs doing business in California are required to designate and maintain a registered agent. Failure to properly maintain one will result in negative actions with the state.

What happens if a document arrives for me?

It's rare; most clients never receive a service of process. But in the event a document does arrive for your entity, we scan it and email it to you promptly. The hard copy is forwarded to you.

How do I switch my existing agent to Corpgate, Inc.?

Sign up, and we'll email you simple instructions for updating your registered agent with the California Secretary of State. It's a single form. Important: sign up before filing any state form that lists Corpgate, Inc. as your agent. Filing first can result in lost documents and can leave your entity out of compliance with the state.

How does renewal work?

Annual plans renew automatically each year, and you can update your billing or cancel anytime through your account link. 3-year plans are a single payment, and we'll remind you by email before the term ends.

How do I log in to my account?

There's no password. Open our customer portal, enter the email address on your account, and a secure sign-in link is emailed to you. From there you can update your card or mailing address anytime.

Note: if you haven't made a payment since July 1, 2026, you won't be in our new billing system yet, and no sign-in email will arrive. Just use the renewal link in your email — the portal will recognize you after that payment.

Who can be a registered agent in California?

Either an individual California resident with a physical street address (P.O. Boxes don't qualify), or a corporation registered with the Secretary of State under Corporations Code section 1505 to act as a professional agent. Corpgate, Inc. is a registered 1505 corporate agent.

How much does a registered agent cost in California?

Professional registered agent services in California typically charge $50 to $300 per year, with national brands at the top of that range. Corpgate, Inc. charges $49 per year with a 3-year plan (one $147 payment) or $79 year to year. Flat, with no hidden fees. Full breakdown in our guide to registered agent costs in California.

Do you serve out-of-state companies doing business in California?

Yes. Out-of-state (foreign) corporations and LLCs registered to transact business in California must maintain a California agent for service of process, and we serve them just like domestic entities.

How long does signup take?
